Overview

Hang Social is developed by Nilsen Lab. It lets people share availability, manage friends and groups, and create events.

We collect the data needed to provide those features, protect accounts, deliver notifications, and respond to support or safety reports.

We do not sell personal data, do not show ads, and do not use data for tracking across apps or websites.

Data We Collect

Account and Contact Information

We collect your name, email address, account identifier, username, and optional phone number or external contact handles when you add them to your profile. Firebase Authentication processes your password for sign-in; we do not store it in your public profile.

Friends, Groups, and Events

We store friend connections, friend requests, friend groups, availability status, status text, event titles, event descriptions, event venue text, RSVPs, and event comments.

Activity and Friend Search

We record account activity times when you sign in or update your profile or status. Username searches are sent to Firebase to find matching public profiles. Hang does not show or maintain a search-history list.

Photos

We store profile photos if you choose to upload one.

Notifications and Preferences

We store Expo push tokens, notification preferences, status visibility settings, and blocked-user controls to deliver notifications and respect your choices.

Support and Safety Reports

We store reports or support messages you submit so we can review them and respond.

App Updates and Startup Diagnostics

Hang checks for app updates through Expo when it starts. Each check sends app, operating system, and release details together with a random installation token used only for updates.

If the app failed to start on a previous launch, the next check may also include a brief description of that error so the app can recover.

Hang does not add your account details to these requests, and they are not used for advertising or tracking.

How We Use Data

  • To create and secure your account.
  • To show friends, groups, availability, and events inside Hang.
  • To deliver push notifications you enable.
  • To deliver app updates and recover from startup errors.
  • To provide support, handle bug reports, and review safety reports.
  • To enforce app rules and prevent abuse.

Data Sharing

Hang uses Firebase services to authenticate users, store app data, store uploaded profile photos, and run backend functions.

Hang uses Expo services to support push notification delivery and to deliver app updates, including the update checks and startup diagnostics described above.

We do not share personal data with advertising networks or data brokers.

Your Choices

  • You can update profile information from the app.
  • You can change notification preferences from the app.
  • You can block users from the app.
  • You can delete your account from the Danger Zone section of the Profile tab or request deletion by email.

Deletion and safety retention

Deleting your account removes your profile, social connections, notification settings, groups and events you created, and participation and comments on other events.

We keep a minimal record with the deleted account ID and deletion dates to prevent old account credentials being reused. Restricted safety reports involving the account are kept for a 90-day retention period, then removed by a daily cleanup job. They may be held longer for an active investigation or a legal obligation.

Children

Hang Social is intended for adults aged 18 and older.

If you believe a child has provided personal data without appropriate permission, contact lukas@nilsenlab.com.
